About Khosi Delores Little-Deedee

KHOSI LITTLE

Khosi Little was a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her late husband, Al, was the love of her life.

In the early sixties, she lived in Brooklyn with Al and their two beautiful daughters. As a young adult, Khosi embraced and wore her natural hair. Children in the neighborhood would often tell her daughters, “Your mother is from Africa!”

When Khosi joined the Grandassa Models in 1964, she had the opportunity to showcase her one-of-a-kind knitted clothing and accessories, including hats, scarves, and even bathing suits. A two-piece outfit she created—a dress and pants set—was featured in Kwame Brathwaite’s “Black Is Beautiful” exhibition beginning in June 2019. The exhibition traveled to museums in numerous states, including California, Texas, Michigan, and South Carolina.

Khosi sewed or knitted all of the clothing she modeled in the Naturally Shows. For many years, she also created all of the fashions for a series of African-inspired fashion shows in Brooklyn, New York. The models and many attendees wore stunning braided hairstyles created by her youngest daughter.

While modeling with the Grandassa Models, Khosi was recruited by South African singer and dancer Matiwane Manana to tour with Miriam Makeba as a backup singer and dancer.

The Naturally Shows celebrated Black culture, aesthetics, and natural beauty while encouraging economic independence. One memorable affirmation sung by the entire audience at every Naturally Show was:

“You gotta be natural and buy Black You better be natural and buy Black You gotta be natural and buy Black ’Cause Black is definitely back!”
